There are fireworks everywhere right now. Convenience stores? Check. Drug stores? Check. Grocery stores? You betcha. And let me tell you, people have been stocking up.They are displayed on the street at just about any store you pass and I have been listening to them since Boxing Day.
BANG! Crack! Sizzle! BOOM!
They can sneak up on you if you aren’t paying attention. Whilst fetching Bam-Bam from school today, we found a small cluster of teenagers giggling and cheering as they set off small ones from a park bench. I couldn’t help but think fireworks during the day defeats the purpose of lighting up the sky but I’m new here and have yet to learn the ways of Berlin. Late at night, though, you can hear them repeatedly. They have been starting earlier and earlier the closer to the end of the year we get and the sounds emanate from any available open space. The lights in the air match the lighter spirits in the city.
…But maybe the fresh snow has had something to do with it, too. I walked through the park with groceries slung over my shoulder and was greeted with raucous laughter and smiles wider than the faces they were firmly planted on. We have enough snow for sledding now! Either way, the happiness has been infectious. I’m not complaining, not one bit.
Tonight I will wrap myself in my biggest and fuzziest sweater, watch fireworks from our balcony, drink champagne, and hope The Mutt isn’t too badly scared by all the hoopla. I can’t think of a better way to bring in the new year for our little family on our big adventure.
